The Ruth Kammer Food Pantry
Our food pantry provides fresh and shelf stable food along with a few toiletries and household items to an average of 700 people every month through scheduled food appointments. Volunteers guide eligible neighbors through the “Client Choice Food Program'' allowing neighbors to select groceries that they know their households will eat and enjoy. Our goal is to provide an in-store grocery shopping experience that provides the neighbors with choice and dignity.
Bus Passes
In an effort to assist people who have recently started or just been offered a new job, the Caring Ministry can provide 22, one-way bus passes until the individuals receive their first paycheck. Bus passes are only given once every 6 months - only if you start another new job.
NOTE: Employers are called to verify employment.
Utility Relief
Caring Ministry is a partner agency with CAP (Customer Assistance Program) and DEF (Dollar Energy Fund) processing applications for utility relief for Columbia Gas and Met-Ed customers.
Spiritual Care
At the Caring Ministry, we want to meet the spiritual, as well as the physical, needs of our neighbors. We offer times to sit, talk, and pray with our First Presbyterian Church of York’s Spiritual Director. We also invite neighbors to submit a written prayer request to confidentially share the request with our Pastors and prayer chain. Additionally, we are happy to connect our neighbors to one of the many spiritual care programs offered at First Presbyterian Church of York.
Referral Services
While the Caring Ministry offers an array of assistance programs for our community, we realize that we are unable to assist in every need. If we cannot meet the neighbors’ needs, we strive to find other resources to provide the requested services.
Senior Food Box Program
Senior Food Box Program is a program sponsored through the York County Food Bank. It provides individuals who are 60+ with an additional free box of groceries each month in addition to the items provided through the Client Choice food shopping experience at the Caring Ministry.
Prescription Medication Assistance
Through our Prescription Assistance Program, neighbors can receive up to $50 towards prescription medication costs once every 6 months. Neighbors are provided with vouchers redeemable at local pharmacies.
Special Programs
– Winter items - such as hats, scarves, gloves, and sometimes coats - are made available to our neighbors depending upon donations from the community.
– Christmas Hospitality provides Christmas dinner and gifts for children and their parents in December.
NOTE: Registration is required and is offered on a first come, first served basis.
Our History
In 1989, First Presbyterian Church of York (FPC) received a bequest from Frank Smith to establish a ministry for the benefit of the underserved of York City. After careful and prayerful study to determine how best to carry out the donor’s wishes, FPC started the Caring Company (now known as The Caring Ministry of First Presbyterian Church) and hired a director to provide leadership for the organization. The Caring Ministry is overseen by a director and an advisory committee comprised of FPC members.
The Caring Ministry is an outreach of First Presbyterian Church that serves those in need in York City and York County. Every attempt is made to coordinate the services the Caring Ministry provides with other agencies in York to avoid duplication of services and to insure that client needs are being met. Other social service agencies in the community assist in this by referring people to the Caring Ministry.
The Caring Ministry is currently located in the Billmeyer House, adjacent to the church, at 225 East Market Street in York. The Billmeyer House was purchased from the Historical Society in 1959, and was remodeled to house the church offices in the 1970’s. In 2017, the offices were relocated, and the Billmeyer House was remodeled to allow for improvement and expansion of the Caring Ministry facilities
